Where are you based?

Fayetteville, North Carolina.

Why did you decide to start a business?

Upfront, I decided I want to start a business because I was good at planning celebrations for others pro bono.  The back end of my story is I  fell in love with planning events while orchestrating numerous military ceremonies and parties. At that time, I never considered doing it for myself. I became an elementary school teacher and volunteered to plan school events. I moved on to a civil service job still planning events, co-workers weddings, office parties, etc.  I knew I was good and I kept thinking, I just want to plan beautiful weddings and events. But in order to do it on a grand scale and get paid for it, I needed to be my own boss and align myself with the people that could help me. My husband kept telling me to follow my heart, stop talking about it, crunch the numbers, and resign. The only stipulation was that I work hard, be happy, and make my clients happy. Fast forward 5 years, I’m still happy, I work hard, and have created memorable celebrations for happy clients.

What is your favorite client story?

My favorite client story comes from a client that I parted ways with because we decided I was not the right planner for her and the vision she wanted. A few weeks passed and the client asked one of her vendors to speak to me regarding another meeting for us to work together. Her vendor reminded her that I was the best planner to design and coordinate her wedding.  The vendor asked if there was any way I would reconsider. I did reconsider.  After the meeting between the client and I, she sent a text to her vendor thanking her for reconnecting us. Her words were “Everyone deserves a second chance even me.” The wedding was beautiful and our business relationship has grown to the level of family.

Who are some of your business idols?

Well, I don’t have an idol, but I admire David Tutera. I  had the  pleasure of meeting David Tutera at the Association of Bridal Consultants annual conference in 2010.  He was the same genuine, personal professional, as seen on TV.  I admire his work but understand what portions of his business model and body of work would be applicable to the P3 Brand and Pearlice.

Do you have any mentors?

No mentors, just accountability colleagues that I can call on for support and best practice advice and guidance.  Will share their name if needed. I really love them.  Mutual respect for each other personally and professionally.

What is your favorite thing about being southern?

Having a home with a front porch. I was born and raised in Montgomery, Alabama, and our family home had a front porch that my mom had extended so we would have more sitting room where the family and friends can gather for fellowship. Adding flower pots, wreath, and door mat adds to the southern hospitality and says “Welcome”. When I built my home,  a front porch and comfortable chairs were a must

What is your favorite southern dish?

Hands down, macaroni and cheese.

What is the most important thing you have done to build your business?

Investing in more professional development and hiring those professional that specialize in marketing and brand development. Hence, we have a new website launching soon that mirrors the type of client that P3 serves best.
