Last month at the Hamby Market we hosted a Southern Tastemaker’s Affair with some of our favorite southern dishes. I have made it a mission to host people at my home more this year but know I will need some help, as in a caterer. With that in mind, Hamby Catering was nice enough to provide me some tips on things to consider when planning a small southern dinner party. Be sure to use these tips as you plan out your summer shindigs ladies! These tips are full proof, so even your judgmental yet loving sorority sister won’t have any shady remarks to make 🙂

1. Keep a Balance
Be mindful of the menu you are creating and make sure the dishes compliment one another. Think of your menu in its entirety and make sure the flavors are cohesive. Also keep in mind who your guests are – if you’re dinner party is an intimate gathering of women like the Southern Tastemaker’s Affair was, consider opting for a lighter culinary approach.
2. Consider the Date
Guests often enjoy a warm soup or heartier entree during the cooler months. In the summer, keep the fair light and crisp.
3. Finishing Touches
A delicate finishing touch can turn an easy dish into something truly special. Our cheesecake mousse is delicious, but topped with fresh, seasonal raspberries (and a mint leaf!) – the flavor multiplies, as does the prettiness.
4.. Pass the bubbly
Get a drink in everyone’s hand when they arrive. Sparkling wine is always festive and a great compliment when eating light hors d’oeuvres during cocktail hour.
