HBCU’s are usually located in small towns. The reason being is because normally, that is where most of the founders were from and where the land was the most affordable. As I said in a previous article on small southern towns, they should not be underestimated because some small towns really have a lot to offer. Although the towns may be smaller, they still have activities, events, and not mention the great food and that southern spark and hospitality that is hard to find in a big city. Below are five small southern towns with HBCU’s that would serve as perfect getaways for a Southern Belle.

Bethune-Cookman University was founded by Dr. Mary McLeod-Bethune as the Daytona Literary and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls on October 3, 1904. With some modifications later on, the school was officially name Bethune-Cookman University on April 27, 1931. The location of this HBCU is Daytona Beach, Florida. This is a great southern small town that is so developed, most people consider it as a city [although the population is recorded as 61,005 citizens as of this year (Suburban Stats)]. This small town should be visited by Southern Belles not only because of the great university, but there are many attractions such as Daytona Beach, of course.

Fort Valley State University, located in the very small southern town of Fort Valley, Georgia, is a great science, math, and agriculture school known for sending more students of African descent to medical and dental programs than any state school of Georgia (FVSU)! The town of Fort Valley is home of the South Peach Park where you can also pick blueberries, pecans, and chestnuts publicly and it has a great number of public events that will perfectly accommodate a Southern Belle.

Selma University, located in Selma Alabama is a private, Bible HBCU that was established as the Alabama Baptist Normal and Theological School to train African Americans as ministers and teachers in 1878, and after a few revisions, was renamed Selma University on May 14, 1908. The small town of Selma served as a major battlefield during the civil rights movement and even has a movie based on these events titled, Selma, Lord Selma. Visiting this town would be an educational and fun experience for a Southern Belle.

Grambling State University located in the very small, southern town of Grambling, Louisiana, has notable alumni such as entertainer, Erykah Badu! Their motto is, “Where everybody is somebody” and with the university’s success, we can tell that they literally abide by their motto. The extremely small town of Grambling has tons of fun attractions such as historic tours, horse racing, water parks, and way more activities that a Southern Belle would really enjoy.

Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas has created plenty of productive people such as Kirko Bangz and Mr. T. This university was established as Alta Vista Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youth” on August 14,1876. The name changed to Prairie View A&M University in 1973 after going through numerous changes since its establishment. The really small town of Prairie View in Texas offers great scenery, tours of the town, and fun recreational activities that allows a Southern Belle and her family to spend quality time while they visit.
