This Charleston bred couple will make your heart melt this Tuesday. They are a pair of Carolina sweethearts now living in DC but always southern at heart. I had the pleasure of meeting them last year at a friend’s Halloween party and I am so happy to feature them on Black Southern Belle. How did you meet? We met initially at a mutual friend’s 18th birthday party.

How long did you date? The 1st time around, 1 year or so. The 2nd time before getting engaged 2 years.

How did he propose? Herman proposed on his 30th birthday at the water’s edge at the Secrets Resort in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

When did you know he was the one? I knew that he was the one during our 2nd chance meeting at his inaugural book signing. We were sitting at a table catching up on the 5 years that had passed since we last saw each other. At that moment, I felt a bit of a twinkle inside, and knew that there was still something there.

What is the cutest thing he has done for you without you asking? On one of my visits to DC, I took the train from SC to save on costs. I had already called Herman to let him know that I was close and what time to pick me up. Expecting him to be there when I finally deboarded, I was certainly in for a surprise. I sat waiting for what seemed like eternity. He finally came about 25-30 minutes. We drove back to his condo, and he asked to wait for another 10 minutes inside the car. At this point, I was a little irritated with all the waiting. Once I was finally allowed to go into the house, I realized what all the waiting was for- a candlelit dinner complete with wine and beautiful music. I loved it!

What is something you love about him that has completely changed your life? His drive. It is really unmatched by anything I’ve ever seen. He has been able to push himself forward to the highest heights in education and in his personal business. He rarely takes a day off, and still finds a way to be humble despite the grandeur of his accomplishments.

What part of wedding planning made you crazy? The guest list for sure. It is the most delicate part of the wedding that can totally make or break everything. After all the fuss, there are guests that did not show.

What part of wedding planning could you not live without? All the arts and crafts! I created everything from my invitations, my logo, menus, and even my favors. It allowed me to have control over the entire package and feel of the day.

What was your first thought the day after your engagement? Is this real?? I remember the morning after looking at my ring as if it was not mine.

What was your favorite part about the ceremony? The live singer that sang as we walked down the aisle. It really added to the ambiance of the outdoor space.

What was your favorite part about the wedding? The dance that Herman and I surprised our guests with at the reception.

Did you do any DIY? If so, what? I did lots of DIY including invitations, logo, menus, program fans, favors, and table numbers.

What is your favorite part about being married to each other? Our friendship and growing together

What did you learn about each other through the wedding planning process? How to work with each for a common good. We put aside everything to make sure that we had the wedding that we wanted.

What better way to start your work week after a long holiday than a good love story. We wish Karen and Herman nothing but the best and are so happy to feature their story. This Lowcountry wedding  is exactly what we love here at Black Southern Belle. Enjoy your week!

XOXO
