What is your favorite room in your home?

Believe it or not, that’s a tough question.  I’ve worked really hard to create a home I absolutely love. If I had to choose, I’d say my master bedroom.  I recently gave it a much needed makeover and I’m obsessed with the vintage floral and neutral colors.

For the holidays, what are some of your favorite decor pieces to incorporate?

I love to add pops of color that relate back to the space during the holidays.  Gone are the days of using red and green exclusively.  These days it’s pretty simple to have holiday decor that’s representative of your style and your home’s color scheme.

How would you describe your home decor style?

Transitional Vintage – It’s a cross between modern and tradition with vintage pieces with modern or classic lines mixed in.

Does your hometown influence how you style your home?

I grew up on the MS Gulf Coast and my home decor isn’t at all coastal.  However, I do think the fact that I grew up in the south has influenced my style.  As a native of the hospitality state, I want my guests to feel completely comfortable and at home.  No space is off limits and mi casa es su casa (i.e. It’s not necessary to leave your shoes at the door.) I believe our homes are made to be lived in.  I love creating beautiful but livable spaces.

What makes a Southern home unique?

I think the Southern home is designed for entertaining. Your lifestyle dictates the type of entertaining, whether formal or casual, but large dining rooms, wrap-around porches and open kitchens allow for comfort and ease in hosting family, friends and neighbors.

What are your go to NC furniture/ home decor stores and why?

That’s easy, I’m a vintage lover so my go-to source of furniture is our local Habitat ReStores. They boast a huge selection of vintage (and depending on the location new) pieces as great prices.

What is your favorite piece of art in your home and why?

I’m just starting to explore art. Right now I love this piece I picked up at a thrift store for $12!  I was drawn to its quiet color scheme and subject.  It’s an abstract but you can almost see a setting sun.  I also like that the artist used what seems to be corrugated cardboard for added texture.

Did your mother inspire any of the pieces in your home?

My mother and I both have Bachelor’s degrees in Home Economics, so we tend to have a love of all things domestic.  We both love everything from formal place settings to gardening.

What is your motto when it comes to decorating your home?

I subscribe to what’s known as the interior design golden rule, a quote from William Morris which says, “Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.”  Basically, if it doesn’t have a functional purpose or is beautiful or both then it shouldn’t be in your home.  This rule helps me to surround myself with beauty and with things that make life better or easier.

Did you do any DIY projects in your home?

If so, what did you do? I’ve done lots of DIY projects in my home.  One of my favorites was the glass panel I added to my kitchen cabinet door. It was an experience that included a few hiccups, but it turned out great.

Do you have any family heirlooms? If so, what and tell us more about them.

My Grandmother admired bright colored Fiestaware for decades and late in her life she was finally able to purchase some.  I inherited the colorful dishware when she passed away and it’s one of my favorite things to use when entertaining.  I can imagine how pleased she’d be that I have, treasure and most importantly use it. Other than that, I don’t really have any “heirlooms” but I do have my eye on a few family pieces at my parent’s home in Mississippi.  One day….

What are some of your mother’s home decor traits or styles that you inherited?

My mother enjoys relaxing outdoors.  In fact, on a recent trip home I actually gave her back deck a mini-makeover.  She loves it!  I too enjoy a very relaxing retreat outdoors.  This year I added an outdoor fireplace and lights.  Both definitely increased the cozy factor exponentially.

In your kitchen, what piece of decor is the most functional and stylish and why?

I actually have a huge comfy chair and in my kitchen.  It was purchased for another space but turned out to be too large.  I placed it in the kitchen and it is the seat guests ALWAYS fight over. It’s not totally reflective of my current style but I’ve grown to love it.  It’s one of those southern additions that make guests comfortable and that alone makes it totally worth keeping.

I love her style it’s warm yet concise, there is not tug of war between warmth and clutter. Her style gives the most at home feeling. Items are beautiful yet welcoming to touch and use .
