We are all spending a lot more time at home, as is Mimi and her family. She wanted to create cozy spaces for her older children while also creating a quieter home environment. She looked to The Carpet & Rug Institute for expert advice on adding carpet to their bedrooms.

“When it was time to start considering new flooring for my children’s rooms, for a very short time we tossed around the idea of putting a hard surface option in their rooms, and then when I put some thought into how my children live in their rooms it was evident that carpet was the best choice. My children sit on the floor a lot, both of them for different reasons even though they have chairs and desks in their rooms,” shares Mimi. “Choosing carpet was a no-brainer when it came to making sure their spaces continued to serve them well.”

Carpet is aesthetically pleasing and practical as it offers noise reduction by dampening sound like when Mimi’s son is playing his violin

The Beauty of Carpet really goes beyond aesthetics, what are the biggest benefits to adding carpet to your home?

Our home is older and can get drafty in the winter, I think the new texture on the carpet will warm the rooms up literally and figuratively. In addition, my children play instruments and enjoy dancing and jumping in their rooms… let’s just say the sound barrier is priceless!

Did you design this room around the carpet or choose the carpet to match the design?

When replacing the carpet in my children’s room, I did consider the current color schemes in their rooms. I also wanted something a little darker that would offer a little contrast. My son’s room is a little dark so in his case I wanted something to add a masculine feel, and where my daughter’s room was lighter in nature, I felt the darker carpet would ground it a little more. I’m happy how the darker gray turned out in both cases.

When you children spend a lot of time on the floor, soft carpet can go a long way.

What do you love most about having carpet in your children’s rooms?

I love that they can comfortably sit on the floor and do whatever they do! I wanted them to be comfortable, and since they already spent a lot of time on the floor, we did upgrade the padding so they could have a little more cushion.

Why is carpet practical for a children’s room?

Children spend a lot of time on the floor whether it’s lounging for older children, or playing with toys for younger ones. Carpet is a great way to offer a little cushion, while adding style to your home.

Indoor air quality is important especially for growing children. Carpets helps to improve indoor air quality.

Why did you choose this particular texture?

I like a longer pile, I like the way it feels under my feet, and I am one of those people that walk around barefoot. I also chose this texture for a little luxury!

What are some tips for others to add carpet to their children’s room, young or older?

Consider how your children live in their rooms. If they are always on the floor, I definitely recommend adding a higher grade padding to give them some extra comfort. I also recommend a darker color; while my children are older now, the lighter carpet we had took a bit of a licking with art project stains. If you do decide to go with a lighter carpet for younger children, look into scotch guarding and adding a carpet steamer to your list of home gadgets to ensure it stays clean.
