I have two little ones at home and so I’m always looking for clever ways to keep them entertained and share our family heritage with them. A Kid-Friendly Porch Party with their favorite Gullah foods is a fun way to do both. For our porch party, I wanted to make heritage-inspired decorations with a blue color scheme. I chose Krylon Fusion All-in-One paints to showcase the shades of blue that are meaningful to me. Krylon Fusion All-in-One is a product that bonds to difficult surfaces including plastics without preparation. The product provides maximum rust protection for all outdoor projects, which is great for me and I had a large selection of colors in multiple finishes and sheens to choose from for both indoor and outdoor use.
Indigo is grown throughout the lowcountry and remains a staple in decor in the region, all of which traces its roots to the Gullah community. Indigo and blues are also important to me as my father, just like many other Gullah men and women joined the Navy. Military service has a rich heritage in the Gullah community, Decorating with indigo and blue is important to me and an easy way to share my Gullah Geechee culture with my children.
DIY Heritage Wreaths
I use wreaths for all occasions usually in white or green, but I wanted to add a little blue to create a heritage wreath. I placed wreaths on a plastic bag over a cotton tablecloth and lightly sprayed a green plastic wreath with one coat of Krylon Fusion All-in-One in Satin Peacock Blue and one coat of Krylon Fusion All-in-One Matte Ink Blue to give the wreath a hint of blue. Both of these colors were a part of the New Heritage family of Krylon’s 2021 Color-trend palette. Once the wreath dried I wrapped it in with Indigo fabric and used mini clothespins to add artistic postcards depicting traditional Gullah lifestyle. The wreaths took about 30 minutes from start to finish.
DIY Painted Placemats
Placements are great for every occasion as decorations and to keep food messes at bay. I created custom colored placements in shades of blue to add colorful, heritage details. My time is limited so I needed a fast and easy way to complete my DIY projects. I chose Krylon Fusion in Satin Peacock Blue to spray paint rattan placemats. I laid the placements flat on a cotton tablecloth on a table outdoors and sprayed four placements with the first coat of Krylon paint. Let them dry and spray with a second coat. The project took only 15 minutes.
Once my DIY projects were completed I decorated our front porch with the placements and wreath. I brought some of my favorite African American and Gullah kids books to reach to my kids while they enjoyed their favorite Gullah foods including grits with sauteed fish and eggs, along with some of my favorite biscuits and local honey from a Gullah owned farm in my community. .
