Gullah Heritage: Juneteenth Fun in Hilton Head Island

Gullah Heritage: Juneteenth Fun in Hilton Head Island

Juneteenth is one of many events that we should celebrate. Whether it’s an outdoor party to gather with family and friends or just a festival to show support to Black-Owned Businesses, Juneteenth is a family-friend holiday that we all can enjoy. If located, near, or traveling to Hilton Head, around June 19th,  I have a few suggestions that I know you and your family would appreciate and enjoy.

Hilton Head, a destination location for many travelers who want to experience the Southern Lowcountry lifestyle, is known for its Atlantic Ocean beaches, the Harbour Town Lighthouse and the Coastal Discovery Museum. This Lowcountry town offers plenty of outdoor attractions  and natural beauty, and on June 17th, 18th and 19th, locals and tourists will be in the heart of Hilton Head attending the Juneteenth Celebration on Hilton Head at the Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park.

Below is a detailed list of the activities for you and your family to attend.

June 18th: Dinner & A Movie In The Park

The film Juneteenth: Lift Every Voice and Sing presented by BLKFreedom will take you through a journey of the historic institutions and anthropologists. So, get comfortable! Bring your chairs and blankets, and enjoy!

June 19th: 7th Annual Juneteenth Celebration in Historic Freedom Park

With foods by Melly Mel’s, Gullah Geechee Cuisines and Rainbow Ice, art featuring the Keepers of the Canvas and vendors ranging from the Reconstruction Era National Network and the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor; this event is one that no one wants to miss. Kids will also enjoy this event as well. From video games and fun area for kids and entertainment by Marlena Smalls and Hallelujah Singers like Inda Walker and DJ D White, Black Southern Belles and Black Southern Beaus will be happy to bring the entire family along

Since this event is very much a family friendly event, I have a few tips and suggested things for you to bring along for this Juneteenth weekend festival to ensure the kids have just as much fun as you.

Things to Bring With For Your Kids

  1. Sunblock

No child wants to get sunburn when enjoying themselves outside. So sunscreen is one

item to bring along in order for your kids to enjoy the entire day.

  1. First Aid Kit

Running, playing, and walking will be at the top of the to-do list for kids during

Juneteenth weekend. So be prepared and ready to become the nurse of the day, if necessary.

  1. Hats/shades

Protection from sunlight is important. As temperatures continue to rise in the South, hats

and shades are becoming a necessity. Remember to keep the kids cool and protected!

  1. Ear Plugs

With live entertainment noise may be at an all time high. So protect the ears of the little

ones by bringing ear plugs for noises that could possibly affect hearing.

With Juneteenth just a few days away, we hope that these 4 suggested items to bring along and event suggestions for Juneteenth weekend prepare your family for the fun that awaits.
