Lakes are much different from beaches. Lakes provide a different kind of family time. Lakefronts are more personable and less crowded for Black Southern Belles and their families. These locations are ideal for relaxing travel and fun uncommon adventures and serves as a great addition to an already funfill weekend historical excursion.
Since lakefronts are such a popular pastime; especially during the summer, we want to feature a few from the South that have got and still receive much enjoyment from our community.
Black Heritage Travel: Historically Black Lakefronts
North Waterfront Route
Located in the city of Alexandria, Virginia, which was home to the largest slave trading firm in the deep south, and also later became a place for African Americans to become the main population in Alexandria. Originally along the North Waterfront Route, African Americans, enslaved and free, have lived, worked, and contributed to the community and lakefront in a tremendous way. Besides providing jobs and ways to make a means for the African American community, this lakefront is now great for participating in leisure activities such as fishing and enjoying picnics.
Fox Lake
Near Angola, Indiana, is a growing and prospering resort community for African Americans. Initially, Fox Lake came to be in May of 1836 by the owner Daniel Fox anod now many individuals still contribute to the settlement of this region. Even though Fox Lake resulted from Jim Crow segregation which prohibited African Americans from vacationing at white resorts, this location has become one of our favorites and enjoyable lakes known to our culture and a place to gain a history lesson as well. If ever in the Indiana area or looking for a place to travel near the South, Indiana should be considered on your lakefront travel exploration.
Lake Sybelia
Once upon a time the 84-acre Lake Sybelia once was the swimming hole for adults and children in the African American community. Now the lake is surrounded by homes and is known as the Eatonville most scenic lake to view. This lake is fueled by the rain in the community and remains a location for tourists or local community members to appreciate. Great for fishing, located in a nice neighborhood, and known to our culture, Lake Sybelia is always a place we should try to explore if you are near the area of Eatonville, Florida.
Lakefront travel is similar to beach travel but provides you and your family with great travels and less crowds. Lakes are secluded and everyone aren;’t aware of them which makes this guide perfect for your travel destination. Instead of questioning what to do on your journey or travel through the South, these lakefront examples help you fill your itinerary in completely. Leave no historical place unknown in the South.
