School is back in session and college students are moving onto or back onto campus. Like many of us, we can all reflect back to our first time moving into our HBCU. Some first-year college students may have or have had a nervous move-in experience; while returning students may often have a quick process and a more excited feeling to move back in. Even though everyone’s experience is different with moving into the campus dorms, there are a few essential items needed to move back into the dorm comfortably.
How to Prepare For Move-in Day/Week
Toiletries
Suggestion for Student: Move-in quickly, but ensure that you have all the toiletries you may need. Make a store run when you get near your HBCU or once you get settled to pick up some essential items.
Soap
Shampoo
Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Mouthwash
Deodorant
Lotion
Towels
Washcloths
Paper Towels
Tissue
Face cleansing items
Exfoliating scrubs
First Aid Kit
Suggestion for Student: Purchase a small first-aid kit for any small or minor injuries that may happen during move-in day or participating in any intramural activities. Yes, a nurse may be on campus but if you stay prepared you won’t have to get prepared.
Sheet Set
Suggestion for Student: Your personality is able to be shown in the styling of your room and a perfect way to add in your personal style is through bedding sheet sets. Pick colorful or subtle texture sheets to make your home away from home complete.
Above are just a few ways in which you can prepare for move-in day. Many have done this same major transition just like you and I and have also shared their memories of move-in day with us below.
4 HBCU Students Memories of Moving In
Serenity Graham
A Junior at Voorhees College
Q:What feeling can you remember from moving into your HBCU?
A: In 2018 I began to attend the prestigious Voorhees College. Since I am from Minneapolis Minnesota where everything is snowy and artsy, I was so nervous as a freshman, especially leaving the state and starting fresh all by myself. I prayed to God to be safe and that I would meet some amazing people who loved & welcomed me with warm gestures. I came to Voorhees with a positive mindset, a spunky sense of fashion, and a gift to sing and willingness to share my talent with the South.
Q: What are some must have items when moving in to start college?
A: Moving into my dorm I knew that I needed all the important things such as books, comforters, toiletries..etc. However, the most important things I brought to Voorhees was my wisdom and my WHY. It sounds crazy but that’s literally it and it has kept me thus far.
Q: How soon did you become acclimated to your HBCU campus?
A: Once I became Miss Freshman 2019-2020 I understood that God’s plans were on his time; I just needed to use what he’s blessed me with and moving to Voorhees College gave me that start. I am now 21 years old and I am a junior striving to be the best woman, leader and peer mentor I can be and am extremely acclimated to my HBCU campus.
Q: Any last remarks?
A: Overall, when 2023 comes I will be ecstatic but yet thankful because I know some people have different reasons for why they are in college but I am understanding my own WHY & I will continue to never lose the thought or sight of my why.
Joslyn Williams
2021 graduate of Voorhees College
Q:What feeling can you remember from moving into your HBCU?
A: I was kind of nervous but excited to be around young adults like me seeking a higher education. I didn’t know entirely what to expect but was more excited to see new faces and gain more friends.
Q: What are some must have items when moving in to start college?
A: Some must haves for me were food, school supplies, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. I was not sure exactly what to expect so coming prepared with a plethora of those items was my goal when I first moved in.
Q: How soon did you become acclimated to your HBCU campus?
A: I must say by the 3rd day, I became acclimated to Voorhees College. I was very sociable so it was very easy for me to get comfortable with my new everyday life & meeting new people.
Regina Rouse
2021 Graduate of Benedict College
Q: What feeling can you remember from moving into your HBCU?
A: The feeling that I felt from the first time moving into my HBCU was a little nervous. The school had placed me in an apartment with three other females who were very nice and made me feel very comfortable because they were so down to earth.
Q: What are some must have items when moving in to start college?
A: The must have items coming into college are a mattress pad, pillows, sheets, blankets, comforters, laundry basket, detergent, desk lamp, mini trash can, extension cord, headphones, toiletries, clothing for different types of weather, household items, office and desk supplies.
Q: How soon did you become acclimated to your HBCU campus?
A: It took a couple of weeks to get acclimated with the campus. I was someone who had to come out of my shell and experience. The HBCU experience did not disappoint.
Talyia Durant
2018 Graduate of Voorhees College
Q: What feeling can you remember from moving into your HBCU?
A: I was nervous and anxious when moving into my HBCU because I was going to be away from home from my family for a long period of time.
Q: What are some must have items when moving in to start college?
A: For me, some essential items to have when moving in includes clothes, other personal items, laptop, printer, & of course pictures of family and close friends.
Q: How soon did you become acclimated to your HBCU campus?
A: It took me a whole semester to get accustomed to Voorhees College campus. I like the campus because it was small and I didn’t have to walk far; especially when it was super hot or if it was raining.
We share these memories with our Black Southern Belle community because we want to get you prepared of what to expect as a student and also for those HBCU alums to reminisce on their moving experience. We would love to hear more about your experience and would greatly appreciate it if you would share them with us.
