HBCU Heritage: Fundraiser Launched to Renovate the Boyd House at Fisk University

HBCU History and heritage is one of my favorite things to showcase and highlight. When I can marry my love for architecture and my love for HBCUs’ that is even better. I am honored to share the news of a historic opportunity to partner with us in the renovation of the Boyd House on the campus of Fisk University. The home was originally owned by Dr. Henry Allen Boyd, second-generation leader of the National Baptist Publishing Board (NBPB), now the R.H. Boyd Publishing Corporation, and his wife Georgia Bradford Boyd, a suffragist and a prominent community voice for the advancement of women’s and children’s issues.

R.H. Boyd Publishing Co. recently launched a $1.1 million nationwide campaign to restore this early-twentieth-century Edwardian-style home, which is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The home is being renovated to create academic spaces, such as classrooms and a lecture hall, and to build opportunities to further the educational pursuits of students in business and entrepreneurship.

As we enter HBCU homecoming season, it is imperative to keep the spirit of HBCU community alive through our treasured landmarks and places, including our historic homes and the Boyd House at Fisk University is a perfect example of HBCU heritage through place.

The Boyd house is a monument to this heritage and legacy of Black excellence through education, entrepreneurship, and community building. This Edwardian style home is a gorgeous example of triumph even during times of hardships, that is a window into the lifestyles of Black Americans during this era and is living example of connecting the past to the present. To learn more about the house and it’s legacy and how to contribute, check out this video featuring LaDonna Boyd, CEO of R.H. Boyd Publishing Co.
