HBCU Pageantry: Tuskegee University Coronation Ball with Southern Charm

HBCU Pageantry: Tuskegee University Coronation Ball with Southern Charm

For Brittney Jones-Dabney, she’s had the opportunity to experience both sides of the crown, wearing the crown as Miss Alabama A&M University 2010-2011 and guiding those selected during their reign as a Royal Court Advisor. She says she truly believes that being in the role of an Advisor is a special calling.

Many are called, but few are chosen, this is what I find myself saying each year to the newly elected Royal Court. “I’ve had the opportunity to advise quite a few courts including Miss Alabama State University and currently Mister and Miss Tuskegee University and Royal Court.” “Historically, the role of an HBCU King or Queen has always been a hallmark to the HBCU community and culture, and I feel honored to be keeping the legacy alive,” she explained.

“When I first started working at Tuskegee University, it wasn’t listed in my job duties to advise the court.” “In fact, I was asked to be an advisor by former the Miss Tuskegee, Alexis Landrum – and without hesitation, I agreed.” “I knew firsthand, what it took to wear the crown and how I could help her, and other members of the Royal Court have a successful year.”

“While working in this position, I have truly grown to love Tuskegee and everything about the “Tuskegee Experience,” that I’ve heard so many people refer to,” she recalled. “I immediately felt welcomed by the community, it was different, everything just felt right, almost like this position was waiting for me.”

Before vowing her commitment to take on such a great task, Dean of Student Life, Mrs. Abena Myers-Taylor asked her if she was sure she wanted to help lead the program.

“I assured her everything would be in great hands and without the support from Dean Taylor, Director of Student Life, Joe Brown, and the Vice-President for Student Affairs, Dr. Kimberly Scott I wouldn’t be to do my job effectively,” she noted. “In addition, I have an amazing committee who also volunteer their time and talents to make sure this program remains, I couldn’t maintain my energy without the support from Kimberly Pointer and Reginald Howell.

“I believe the most tremendous task of this program, is honoring the historical legacy of the Royal Court, Tuskegee University has one of the oldest Royal Court programs dating back to 1927,” she mentioned. “Preserving the legacy of the crown Tuskegee is rich in heritage and values, and everyone knows that Tuskegee University stands tall on the tradition of excellence.”

“By far this has been one of the best experiences for me, as I thoroughly enjoy helping others,” she added. “I get to work with some of the most amazing and talented students, helping mold them into better public speakers, and I get to help our young men and women reach their goals. I believe that the students that hold these positions have to lead with a servant’s heart, as this is the only way to go far in life.”
