First Mardi Gras Indian Big Queen to Reign as Mardi Gras Parade Royalty

Keshia Holmes-Brown is making Mardi Gras history in New Orleans. This New Orleans native is the First Mardi Gras Indian Big Queen to Reign as Mardi Gras Parade Royalty.

Keshia N. Holmes-Brown is a lifelong resident of  New Orleans. Keshia is the daughter of Lizette Holmes and the late Vincent R. Holmes and the wife of Dennis D. Brown. Keshia is a PROUD graduate of the GREAT John F. Kennedy Senior High School. Keshia earned her Bachelor of Science from Loyola University New Orleans, her Masters of Administration from Southern University of New Orleans ( SUNO), her certification in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and is currently pursuing her doctoral degree.

Keshia considers herself a “Health Equity Warrior.” Keshia works hard to implement laws, policies, and procedures for individuals of all ages in the State of Louisiana and nationally. In 2022, Keshia was the recipient of the Equity Award. Keshia Holmes served in several leadership positions locally and nationally and currently serves on local and national committees. 

Keshia is the Big Queen of Geronimo Hunters Mardi Gras Indian Tribe and a member of the Queen of the Nation. On December 6, 2015, Keshia was honored and inducted into , “Queens Rule!” and exhibition, held at the McKenna Museum of African American Art in collaboration of the Mardi Gras Indian Hall of Fame and Donald Harrison, Sr. Museum. Additionally, Keshia was featured in book titled “Queens Rule!” In 2023-2024, Keshia Holmes was honored in the Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) Alumni Hall of Fame. In 2023, Keshia was unanimously voted the 2024 Inaugurial Queen Select of Krewe of Caerus.  Keshia is the FIRST Mardi Gras Big Queen in history to reign as Mardi Gras Parade Krewe Royalty.

Keshia is heavily engaged and active not only in the City of New Orleans but in the State of Louisiana, working to close disparities among citizens. Keshia also gives back to her community by feeding people experiencing homelessness and sponsoring families for Back to School, Thanksgiving, and Christmas holidays in New Orleans. Keshia has volunteered and helped shape the Fire Safety Explorer Program with the New Orleans Fire Department. Throughout this program, Keshia has volunteered and mentored students in the Educational Center, helping reach underrepresented individuals within the community.
