Looking for a quick weekend getaway or a fun place to work remotely while exploring fresh Gullah Culture and experiencing luxury accommodations? You should add Beaufort, SC, to your list. Nestled in the heart of South Carolina’s Lowcountry, Beaufort is my favorite place to explore the Lowcountry for a romantic getaway (I have celebrated my anniversary here a few times) or a family vacation (kids can’t get enough of running around the Penn Center or trying local sodas and desserts at the Lowcountry Produce Market and Cafe).
If you are a foodie, then you have to add Beaufort, SC, to your summer travel plans. I grew up eating Gullah cuisine and Beaufort is the perfect place to explore classic shrimp and grits, red rice, and okra soup. You can try it at Gullah Express (order the crab balls and shrimp burger!)or Gullah Grub (okra soup is a must) If you are a culinarian at home, you can buy local and fresh ingredients to bring back home and recreate at Cook on the Bay (add Shrimp and Grits mix to your shopping list) or Barefoot Farms (pickup sometimes to make pressed juice at home)
Beaufort also boasts fine dining options that cater to more refined palates, with restaurants serving fresh seafood and farm-to-table specialties. What I love about these fine dining places is how child-friendly they are. From newborn to kindergarten age, my kids and family have loved dining at Saltus River Grill. It’s the perfect place to eat outside and let the kids run free.
I love a great hotel experience, and Beaufort offers all the Lowcountry hospitality one could ask for. From stunning views of the waterfront to impeccable service, and amenities that ensure a memorable visit. Here are a few of my favorites;
- Anchorage 1770 – The grits are perfection, along with the French Press Coffee
- The Beaufort Inn – The courtyard and porches are what Lowcountry dreams are made of!
- City Loft Hotel– Love the gourmet snack shop, a great place to pack up before a beach day
Whether you’re planning a romantic getaway or a family vacation, Beaufort has everything you need for a great stay.
Alongside your stay, indulge in Lowcountry experiences such as boating, where you can discover dolphins (a kid’s favorite and mine too) or just enjoy the view of the beautiful marshland. Guided tours and outdoor activities provide an immersive way to appreciate the natural beauty and wildlife of the area or learn about the rich Gullah history of Beaufort, SC on a carriage tour downtown, which is a great activity for the kids.
No trip is complete for me without a little shopping. From classic Lowcountry cookbooks to traditional Gullah Art, the boutiques, galleries, and museum gift stores downtown or on Saint Helena Island are great places to find unique souvenirs and gifts to take home while supporting locally owned businesses and artisans. Here are a few of my favorites;
