Home decor is a big deal in the South. Our mothers eat, sleep and breathe having a beautiful well kept home and we inherit that gene. Andrea Glover has decided to take her love of home decor and creating into her business. The owner of Letter Decor, she designs custom hand painted canvases with names, phrases and places. What services do you provide?
I design custom hand painted canvases with names, phrases and places. Everything is hand done and custom designed just for the customer.
Why did you decide to start a business?
I actually decided to start my business because I could not find what I wanted in the store. I wanted something with large fun letters in the colors that I wanted. I wanted the artwork to have a somewhat funky look that mainly just focused on letterforms.
Before you owned a business, what did you do?
I actually was and still am a graphic designer. I was working as a graphic designer full time. Now, I do freelance graphic design work and I teach full-time while also managing my business part-time.
What is your favorite client story ?
I think my most favorite client story is when I was working at the Charleston City Market in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. There was a couple from Texas that wanted something special to take back home with them and to remind them of their wedding anniversary. They’d been married for a number of years and I had a canvas that read, “Love Never Ends ( 1 Corinthians 13:8)”. They fell in love with it and had to buy it. They looked so much in love! It really warmed my heart.
What is the most interesting client request you have had?
One customer that I really love wanted two canvases. Both of the canvases read, “Sisters at heart”, in the corner of the canvas there were two little women stick figures. One canvas was blue and the other was red. Her plan was to give her best friend the blue canvas and she would keep the red one. I thought that was so sweet. They’ve been friends for years!
What is the most important thing you have done to build your business?
The most important thing I have done is to have an online presence with my website and social media. I try to keep everything updated and professional. I also provide customers with high quality work that will last them a lifetime. I have had the opportunity to create custom hand painted canvases for people all over the nation.
Who are some of your business idols?
I am a big fan of Oprah!
Do you have any mentors?
This may sound a bit cliché, but my parents have served as amazing mentors throughout my whole life. I also have an amazing friend from grad school who is also a designer. She really helps me creatively! My graphic design professor from USC has also been a great mentor to me for many many years.
What is your favorite thing about being southern?
I enjoy just being a classy and polished southern lady!
What is your favorite southern entrees or sides?
I absolutely love mac and cheese but I also love shrimp and grits. Oh, and I can’t forget she-crab soup!
What do you love about southern decor?
I really love the simplicity and sophistication of southern decor.
What inspires you to do your work?
Making other people happy. I like for them to request a painting and then I create it for them.
As far as custom products, what have been some of your favorite to design?
I really love designing all of of them, because each of the paintings are so unique and special. No two paintings ever look alike.
What do you love about living in the low country?
I like the peace and privacy we have down here in the lowcountry. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love the city, but there is something nice and calming about living the simple life.
What southern traditions do you instill in your business?
Just to treat everyone with respect and to give great customer service.
What is your favorite restaurant in Charleston?
I would have to say Kaminsky’s. I just love the whole concept of serving mainly coffee and dessert in a restaurant. It is always nice to go there and have a sweet treat with friends.
If you could create a custom design for any person or place, who/what would it be for and what would you design?
I would create something for the first family. I would tell them that they could request anything their heart desired!
What is your favorite item or piece of clothing to wear/use while doing business?
I love just wearing my funky glasses that I got from SEE eyewear in downtown Charleston. I think they make me look artsy.
