Designing Black Women: New Orleans Native Courtney McLeod

Meet Courtney McLeod, the founder and principal of Right Meets Left Interior Design, an award-winning, full-service design studio based in Manhattan. Courtney resides in the vibrant Harlem neighborhood, an excellent source of inspiration. She has lived in New York City for over two decades but remains a Southerner at heart.

Born and raised in New Orleans, Courtney brings a sophisticated view to her rooms, informed by her Creole background and extensive travels throughout Europe and Asia. Courtney is creatively known for joyfully elegant, color confident interiors expressing both her client’s unique tastes and her vivid, collected aesthetic. Courtney shares how New Orleans and her Southern roots have shaped her design sensibilities.

1. How has being from New Orleans inspired your design work?

Growing up in New Orleans was a tremendous source of inspiration – the unique culture and history of the city left a lasting impression. As a kid, we enjoyed playing tourist in my home city – strolling in the French Quarter and riding the streetcar to see the beautiful old homes on St. Charles Avenue – experiences that continue to inform my design aesthetic.

2. What is a must-have Southern element to have in your home?

Beautifully carved mirrors are a key element of classic New Orleans style. I always try to incorporate beautiful mirrors in my design that serve as functional decorative art.

3. Can you share how to incorporate culture into your home?

I believe the best way to incorporate culture is to reference joyful memories. I suggest using an item that you remember from your childhood home. For example, I remember my Mom had a beautiful Buddha head statue. I have a similar piece in my home, which makes me think of my Mom each time I see it. It’s a simple thing that keeps me connected to my roots and makes me really happy.
