Tips for Hosting Sunday Dinner Like a Chef from Andra Hall
1. Keep the guest list small and the menu big.
2. From beginning to end, let the experience tell a story …be authentic.
3. As a host, if you’re having fun so will your guest.
Andra Hall began her career in Florida State Government and eventually transitioned into Corporate America where she worked successfully for several years until a life changing experience. At the tender age of 1, Andra’s only child, Camille, was sent to the hospital for a simple procedure which resulted in unconsciousness and admission to the ICU. Surviving the scare, many doctor appointments and hospital stays followed. Andra made the decision to leave Corporate America and care for her daughter full time. During this time, Andra did some soul searching and realized that baking was a constant in her life. Beginning at the age of 7 with her Easy Bake oven, Andra was quite the avid baker.
Armed with her Grandmothers advice,”It’s best to do one thing and do it really well,” and equipped with her Mama’s knack for baking, Andra launched CamiCakes, LLC which is named after her greatest inspiration, her daughter Camille. CamiCakes, is now a well-established bakery with 5 Atlanta and 2 Jacksonville, FL locations. Recently Hall has ventured in a new way on northwest Atlanta’s food landscape by opening Annie Mae’s Pantry in August 2017. Guided by her own culinary philosophy Hall calls “The Four “S”es: “Simple. Soulful. Savory. Sweet.”, Annie Mae’s Pantry presents a menu which calls up memories of her late paternal grandmother, Annie Mae Norton, and is reflective of Hall’s rural upbringing.
Hall describes, “As a food-centric entrepreneur, I thought my next professional endeavor might be a cookbook. After seeing an old family picture of my grandmother on my cousin’s Facebook page earlier this year, I found myself thinking a lot about Annie Mae, the regional food, like fresh seafood, garden vegetables and “sweets” I ate as a kid and the unique opportunity to share my interpretations of down-home cooking in my very own restaurant.” Before long, she’d sketched out a Southern-influenced menu with modern twists for a cafe-style restaurant that brings a little piece of Monticello, FL, a lazy town situated 30 miles northeast of Tallahassee, to Atlanta. From CamiCakes sweet treats to Annie Mae’s Pantry soulful flavors, Andra Hall has orchestrated a sensory collision with no stopping in sight.
