Two Black Southern Gentlemen Serving Up Hospitality in Hilton Head

Traveling excursions call for restaurant exploration. Whenever we are planning to explore any city with our family and friends, we all have that one family member or friend that begins to look up restaurants in our destination city. Searching up and down for the most popular restaurants in town to try; is their specialty. They search for guides, like the one I am going to present today about two black-owned restaurants run by Black Southern Gentlemen. These two men and their restaurants exude the southern hospitality anchored in Gullah culture that is the true heart of Hilton Head, SC and it’s rich Gullah heritage.

History of Hilton Head, SC

Hilton Head Island which is known for its natural scenery and Southern Lowcountry hospitality is home to a variety of historical sites and cultures from all backgrounds. As a melting pot of many South Carolinians, Hilton Head, SC is a city that many are attracted to. Also, known for being rooted in Gullah traditions, growing Indigo, and cotton, and serving as home to many historic Gullah townships and neighborhoods such as Mitchellville, Hilton Head has more than just great food to offer. However, black-owned restaurants in the South have become a staple in this community and is a must-add to an exploration in Hilton Head Island.

Black-Owned Restaurants in Hilton Head to Explore

Ruby Lee’s South 

Wanting to get dressed up with your family and friends and dine in at an upscale Southern restaurant known for its popular soul food and uplifting entertainment, then Ruby Lee’s South is your Black-Owned Restaurant to try. Started by Tim Singleton and his mother Deborah Goban, the Ruby Lee’s South restaurant provides live music ranging from blues to jazz and also offers a Timbuck 2 Cigar Lounge with state of the art ventilation, superb wine list, and a plethora of bourbon whiskies. Also delicious cuisine fit for a Southern Belle and her family varying from oxtail stew and shrimp and okra gumbo or their local favorites smothered hamburger steak  or the ultimate po boy is another reason the dine in Black-Owned Restaurant is a hit for many.

Max Pour House 

Located on 70 Marshland Road in Hilton Head, SC, Max Pour House is a fairly new restaurant that has the community members of Hilton Head highly pleased. One customer of Max Pour House says “This family owned, local establishment is great and the team there was very friendly!  A very nice place to chill and have a nice beverage. We will visit every time we are in Hilton Head!” Many have enjoyed this restaurant for their signature entrees like the pull pork plate, Max wings, and grilled crab cakes. If you are interested in participating in the first self-serve beer wall in Beaufort County or just want some authentic bites of delicious cuisine, then Max Pour House awaits you.
