Mental health has been a serious topic of discussion this year with shows like Empire and Being Mary Jane bringing it the forefront. As #Black Southern Belles, we are taught to have our pride and keep it all inside but that does not always work especially so much going on in our careers and personal life. The most important thing at the end of the day is yourself. You are the only person who can keep you happy and healthy in your career and your personal life. Here are some tips to help you start the journey to work/life balance as a #Southern Black Belle.
Use your Support Network: So often we are offering to every person in our life but when it comes to ourselves we try to do it all on our own. You have friends, family and support network for a reason. They want to help you succeed and are willing to help you get there. And of course send them cute thank you cards when they do help in typical #Black Southern Belle fashion.
Learn to Say NO!: This is especially hard for Black Southern Belles who are raised to be people pleasers. Yes ma’am or yes sir is more expected than no ma’am or no sir but sometimes you have to say no. To start maybe ask for time to think about it or just say that you don’t have time now but maybe at another time. There are only so many hours in a day and saying NO will free up a few more 🙂
Take Time for Yourself: Do something for yourself at the beginning of every morning. Whether that is working out, listening to your favorite Beyonce Album or reading your favorite book. Do something to make you happy every morning. You should set the tone for your day and start it by taking care of yourself.
Make To Do Lists for Your Life and Work: You have things to do in life, work and personal. Both are just as equally important and treat them as such. If you want to take a vacation or learn to play the piano, put that on your to do list and prioritize it as high as getting that new business account promotion.
Get Professional Help: Sometimes you and your friends are not enough, it is ok to get some professional help. Whether it is a therapist, a part time assistant or a room organizer, find the professional tools you need to find the balance you must have in your work and personal life.
These are just a few tips but we plan on doing more on this topic. If you have any ideas or comments, email me at Michiel@blacksouthernbelle.com
Pour yourself a mint julep and play some Erykah Badu or India Arie and get started on your journey to finding work/life balance.
